The Rains of Ranchipur is a 1955 drama film directed by Jean Negulesco and starring Lana Turner and Richard Burton. The film was based on the novel The Rains Came by Louis Bromfield, which had previously been adapted into a film in 1939.
The story follows the privileged and self-centered Edwina Esketh, who is unhappy with her marriage to her much older and wealthy husband, Lord Esketh. When they arrive in Ranchipur, India, Edwina is immediately drawn to the charming and passionate Indian doctor, Dr. Safti, who is dedicated to helping the local people. Despite the disapproval of those around them, Edwina and Dr. Safti begin a secret romance.
Meanwhile, Edwina also reconnects with her old friend Tom Ransome, who has become an alcoholic after losing his wife and child in a flood. As the monsoon season arrives, a catastrophic earthquake hits the region, causing widespread devastation and tragedy. Edwina, Dr. Safti, and Tom all have to confront their personal demons and make tough decisions in the face of the disaster.
The Rains of Ranchipur was noted for its impressive production values, including extensive location shooting in India and the use of hundreds of extras and animals in the disaster scenes. The film was also criticized for its problematic portrayal of Indian characters and culture, as well as for its melodramatic plot and characterizations.
