The Quiet is a psychological thriller drama film that explores themes of abuse, trauma, and silence. The film centers around Dot, a deaf teenager who moves in with her godparents, Olivia and Paul Deer, after her father dies. Despite her disability, Dot is intuitive and observant, which allows her to uncover hidden secrets within the Deer household.

As Dot tries to adjust to her new life, she discovers that the Deers' daughter, Nina, is deeply troubled and harbors dark intentions towards her family. Nina is jealous of her perceived favoritism towards Dot and is self-destructive due to her father's sexual abuse. She confides in Dot, who is unable to communicate her fears to anyone else.

Meanwhile, Olivia is struggling with her own issues, including her husband's infidelity, her daughter's behavioral problems, and her own emotional distance. Her husband, Paul, is oblivious to his daughter's problems and cheats on his wife with his secretary.

As conflicts within the household escalate, Dot becomes increasingly isolated and vulnerable. She begins to fear for her safety and realizes that only she can protect herself from the dangerous dynamics of the Deer family. The film culminates in a shocking revelation and a violent confrontation that leaves the characters forever changed.
