The Queen of Versailles is a 2012 documentary directed by Lauren Greenfield. The film follows the Siegel family, particularly Jackie and David Siegel. David Siegel is the CEO of Westgate Resorts, a timeshare company that experienced great success leading up to the 2008 economic crisis. The film is mostly shot in their home, a 90,000 square foot mansion located in Florida. The mansion was designed to mimic the Palace of Versailles in France. At the time of filming, it was still under construction and served as a symbol of their immense wealth and success.
The film begins by showcasing the ostentatious lifestyle of the Siegel family. We are introduced to their private jet, their numerous nannies and housekeepers, and their collection of exotic animals that live on their property. Throughout the documentary, we learn about the origins of the family’s wealth and how David Siegel built his timeshare empire. We also see how Jackie Siegel spends her days shopping, caring for her children, and pursuing her own interests.
The film takes a dramatic turn when the 2008 economic crisis hits. As their business suffers, the Siegels are forced to confront their financial situation and make drastic changes to their lifestyle. We see their struggle to keep their home and their business afloat. The couple also faces personal challenges, including the loss of one of their children.
