The protagonist of the movie, known only as "The Man" (played by Shea Whigham), is a drifter with a dark past. He arrives in a small border town and murders the local reverend who had offered him shelter. He then assumes the reverend's identity and takes his place at the pulpit.
The townspeople are taken by the new reverend's passionate and unorthodox sermons, which focus more on self-reflection and forgiveness than strict adherence to scripture. The Man finds himself connecting with the community in a way he never expected.
However, the local police chief, Chief Moore (played by Michael Shannon), is suspicious of the new reverend. He investigates The Man's background and discovers his criminal past. As tensions rise between The Man and Chief Moore, the townspeople begin to question their faith and their trust in their new leader.
As The Man's true identity is revealed and his past catches up with him, the town is forced to confront their own hidden secrets and the line between right and wrong becomes blurred. The movie explores themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the consequences of one's actions.
