"The Purge: Anarchy" is a 2014 American dystopian horror film directed and written by James DeMonaco. It is the second installment in The Purge franchise. It stars Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez, and Michael K. Williams.
The film takes place in 2023, one year after the events of the first film. The government has announced that the annual Purge, a 12-hour period in which all crimes are legal, has been expanded to include all of America. Leo Barnes, a former police sergeant who lost his son in a drunk driving accident, plans to use the night to seek revenge on the man who killed his son, but ends up being drawn into helping a group of stranded strangers.
Leo initially tries to leave the city, but his car breaks down. He comes across Eva, a waitress, and her daughter Cali, who are being chased by masked men. They join forces with a couple, Shane and Liz, whose car was stolen by a group of armed men. The group tries to get to safety, but they are constantly hunted by various groups of sadistic individuals taking advantage of the Purge.
Along the way, they encounter a group of anti-Purge rebels who try to take on the government. Their leader, Carmelo, gives a powerful speech about the injustices of the Purge and encourages the main characters to join the fight. However, Leo insists on focusing on keeping his group alive rather than risking their lives in a battle they may not win.
As they try to survive the night, the group learns more about each other and their motivations. Leo develops a strong bond with Eva and Cali, realizing that he sees them as a surrogate family. In the end, Leo sacrifices his revenge mission to protect the innocent people he has come to care for.
The film ends with the group being rescued by a resistance group led by Carmelo. Leo is seen walking away with a sense of renewed purpose, determined to fight against the immoral Purge and protect the vulnerable in future years.
