The Public Eye is a 1992 crime thriller film directed by Howard Franklin and starring Joe Pesci as Leon "Bernzy" Bernstein, a freelance crime scene photographer in 1940s New York City. Despite his close relationship with the local police department, Bernzy becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving organized crime, corrupt politicians, and the local press.
Bernzy's work takes him to the scene of a murder committed by notorious gangster Sal "The Snake" Boca (played by Richard Riehle), but he is forced by the police captain to withhold his photos from the press. However, Bernzy's curiosity and investigative nature lead him to pursue the case on his own, leading him to cross paths with Boca's mistress Kay Levitz (played by Barbara Hershey) and corrupt political figure Danny the Gimp (played by Stanley Tucci).
As Bernzy continues to investigate, he becomes a target of the conspiracy and is framed for a crime he did not commit. He must use his wit and resourcefulness to clear his name and expose the truth behind the conspiracy.
The Public Eye features excellent period production design and cinematography, capturing the gritty atmosphere of 1940s New York City. Joe Pesci delivers a strong and nuanced performance as Bernzy, and the film features an excellent supporting cast including Barbara Hershey, Stanley Tucci, and Jared Harris. Ultimately, The Public Eye is a compelling and engrossing crime thriller that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
