Scheme for Success: The Producer's Plan for Profitability.

Comedy  United States of America

Max Bialystock is a former successful Broadway producer who has fallen on hard times and now struggles to make a living from mediocre productions. When he meets Leo Bloom, a mousey accountant with a love of musical theater, Max hatches a plan to create a surefire flop and abscond with the investors' money.

With Leo's help, Max finds the perfect show: "Springtime for Hitler," a tasteless and ludicrous musical about the Nazi leader. They hire a terrible director and a cast of eccentric and untalented actors, assuming that it is impossible for anyone to enjoy such a production. However, to their surprise, the play becomes a surprise sensation, receiving rave reviews from critics and becoming a hit with audiences.

As the pair tries to cope with their newfound success, they realize that things might not be as straightforward as they seem. The play's author, a neo-Nazi named Franz Liebkind, becomes furious with the show's popularity and threatens to sue. Meanwhile, Max's former lover and lead actress, Ulla, threatens to reveal their past relationship unless she is given a bigger role.

In the end, Max and Leo are arrested for their fraud, but they manage to turn their fortunes around in an odd way. Thanks to the notoriety of "Springtime for Hitler," they're able to make a profit giving a year-long tour of their terrible play, proving that there's a market for everything.
