In the movie The Principal, Rick Latimer (played by James Belushi) is a burnt-out veteran educator who is demoted and sent to Brandel High, a troubled school filled with gangs and drugs. The students have run rampant in the school for years, and the staff are afraid of them.
Latimer quickly realizes that the situation is much worse than he anticipated. The students are involved in all kinds of criminal activity, ranging from drug dealing to burglary to assault and even rape. The gangs are fighting for control of the school, using violence and intimidation to maintain their power.
Latimer decides to take a stand and clean up the school. He reaches out to the head of security (played by Louis Gossett Jr.), and together they start cracking down on the drug trade and the violence. However, they soon run into resistance from the teenage mafia that controls the school.
The situation comes to a head when Latimer and the head of security attempt to confront the drug dealer's gang. A violent confrontation ensues on the school campus, and Latimer and his allies are faced with a deadly showdown.
Throughout the movie, Latimer struggles to balance his desire to clean up the school with his fear for his own safety. He also faces resistance from his fellow teachers, who are more concerned with their own job security than the welfare of the students.
In the end, Latimer must decide whether to continue fighting the gangs or give up and leave the school to its fate. The Principal is a gripping drama that sheds light on the challenges faced by inner-city schools and the educators who try to make a difference.
