The Prince of Tides is a 1991 drama film directed by and starring Barbra Streisand, based on the novel of the same name by Pat Conroy. It tells the story of Tom Wingo (Nick Nolte), a former football player turned unemployed teacher who is called upon by his suicidal sister Savannah (Melinda Dillon) to come to New York City and speak to her psychiatrist, Dr. Susan Lowenstein (Streisand).
Tom is initially reluctant to open up to Dr. Lowenstein about the troubled past of his family, but eventually begins to tell her about his upbringing in a dysfunctional family in South Carolina. He shares stories of his abusive father (played in flashbacks by George Carlin), his mentally ill mother (Blythe Danner), and his twin sister, who was raped as a young girl and has never fully recovered.
As Tom delves deeper into his family history, he finds himself falling in love with Dr. Lowenstein. Despite their professional relationship and the fact that she is married with children, the two begin a romantic affair. However, their happiness is short-lived when Savannah makes a series of shocking revelations that threaten to tear their family apart.
The Prince of Tides was critically acclaimed upon its release, receiving seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Nolte. Streisand won the Golden Globe for Best Director for her work on the film. The movie explores themes such as family, mental illness, trauma, and the power of love to heal.
