The Pledge is a 2001 crime drama film directed by Sean Penn and stars Jack Nicholson as Jerry Black, a retiring police chief who takes it upon himself to solve the murder of a young girl in a small Nevada town. The film is based on the novel Das Versprechen (The Pledge) by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.
After being called to the scene of a brutal murder, Jerry promises the mother of the victim that he will find her killer. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, Jerry becomes obsessed with solving the case, going so far as to retire from the force in order to fully dedicate himself to the investigation.
Other characters in the film include a local bartender (played by Robin Wright) who becomes romantically involved with Jerry, as well as a mentally challenged man (played by Benicio Del Toro) who is suspected of the murder.
The Pledge received positive reviews from critics for its suspenseful storytelling and excellent performances from its cast, particularly Nicholson. The film also explores themes of grief, obsession, and the fallibility of law enforcement.
