The Pianist is a 2002 biographical war drama film directed by Roman Polanski and based on the memoir of the same name by Wladyslaw Szpilman. The film depicts the true story of Szpilman, a Jewish pianist living in Warsaw during World War II.

The film begins with Szpilman playing live on the radio as the Germans invade Warsaw. Soon after, the city's Jewish population is forced into a small ghetto, and Szpilman's family is among them. Szpilman is forced to leave his job and begins struggling to survive in the ghetto, witnessing the brutal treatment of Jews by the Germans.

In 1942, Szpilman's family is deported to a concentration camp, but he is saved when a friend in the Jewish Ghetto Police helps him escape. Szpilman then works as a laborer outside the ghetto walls until he is able to go into hiding in various places around Warsaw.

Throughout the film, Szpilman is aided by non-Jewish Poles who risk their lives to help him survive. One of his most significant helpers is a German officer, Captain Wilm Hosenfeld, who takes pity on him and helps him hide in the ruins of the city.

The film also depicts the destruction and devastation of Warsaw during the war, with realistic and graphic scenes showing the bombings and destruction of buildings and streets.

The Pianist won numerous awards, including the Palme d'Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody's portrayal of Szpilman. The film is considered a powerful and moving tribute to the resilience of those who suffered during the Holocaust.
