The Photographer of Mauthausen is a biographical drama film released in 2018. It is based on the true story of Francesc Boix, a Spanish prisoner who worked in the photographic service of the Nazi concentration camp located in Mauthausen, Austria. The story begins in 1940 when Francesc Boix is arrested by the Nazis and taken to Mauthausen. He is eventually chosen to work in the SS Photographic Service, where he develops pictures of the camp's prisoners and gruesome medical experiments. Boix is horrified by what he sees and decides to secretly capture and hide the photographs so that they can be used as evidence against the Nazis after the war.
Boix befriends another Spanish prisoner, Valbuena, who helps him in his mission. They risk their lives to hide the negatives, often hiding them in different locations, such as under the floorboards of the barracks or in the stomachs of corpses being transported to the crematorium.
The film portrays the brutal and inhumane conditions in the concentration camp, including the cruelty of the SS soldiers and the torture and murder of prisoners. Boix and his fellow prisoners are constantly reminded of the potential consequences of hiding the photographs, as any perceived misstep could result in their execution.
After the war ends, Boix is finally able to expose the atrocities of the Nazi regime by testifying at the Nuremberg Trials. His photographs become crucial evidence that helps convict many war criminals.
