In The Painted Veil, Dr. Walter Fane (played by Edward Norton) is a bacteriologist who travels to Shanghai in the 1920s to work at a hospital. There, he meets Kitty (played by Naomi Watts), a beautiful socialite who is bored with her life and looking for excitement.
The two quickly get married, but Walter is disappointed to find that Kitty is not interested in being a devoted wife. She has an affair with a married British diplomat and gets caught. Walter, feeling humiliated and wanting revenge, accepts a job in a remote Chinese village where cholera has broken out.
In the village, Walter works tirelessly to save lives and contain the outbreak. Kitty is initially bored and resentful of being stuck in such a remote and unfamiliar place, but she starts to see the beauty in the people and the culture. She also begins to develop romantic feelings for Walter, who is initially cold towards her.
As they work together and face the danger of the cholera outbreak, Walter and Kitty begin to rekindle their relationship. They fall in love again and vow to make a fresh start together. But tragedy strikes when Walter contracts the cholera and dies, leaving Kitty to carry on his work in the village.
