The Oscar

Drama  United States of America

The Oscar, released in 1966, tells the story of Frankie Fane (played by Stephen Boyd), a sleazy and ambitious press agent who is desperate to make it big in Hollywood. Through a series of lucky breaks and questionable decisions, Frankie manages to land a leading role in a major motion picture, catapulting him to fame and fortune.

As he rises through the ranks of Hollywood, Frankie leaves a trail of enemies and broken relationships in his wake. His former lover and struggling actress, Jill (played by Elke Sommer), is bitter about how he used her to further his career and vows to ruin him. Other industry insiders, including his former boss and a rival actor, are also eager to see Frankie fail.

Despite his questionable reputation, Frankie is nominated for an Academy Award. Determined to win at any cost, he launches a campaign of dirty tricks and manipulation, even going so far as to plant false rumors about his fellow nominees. As the film heads towards its climax, Frankie's true character and motivations are exposed, culminating in a dramatic and tense finale.

The Oscar was not well-received by critics upon release, but has since gained a cult following for its over-the-top depiction of Hollywood and its larger-than-life characters. Stephen Boyd's performance as Frankie Fane is a standout, as he manages to make the character simultaneously charming and despicable.
