Father Alex Bernier, played by Heath Ledger, is a young priest who is sent to investigate the death of his mentor, Father Dominic, who was a member of a secretive order of priests. The order, known as Carolingians, is believed to be responsible for protecting an ancient Christian relic, which is rumored to have the power to call forth the devil.
As Bernier investigates, he discovers that the Carolingians secretly believe that the relic has the power to bring about the end of the world, and they are willing to do whatever it takes to protect it. The plot thickens as Bernier uncovers a series of murders that are committed in a manner that is eerily similar to an ancient ritual.
