Robert Neville, played by Charlton Heston, has been living alone in Los Angeles for three years after a deadly virus has wiped out the human population. Neville is immune to the virus, as he was part of an experimental vaccine trial before the outbreak. His days are spent scavenging for supplies and searching for a cure, while his nights are spent barricading himself in his fortified apartment from the nocturnal mutants, who were once human but are now imbued with superhuman strength and an intense hatred for Neville.
Despite being alone, Neville remains determined to cure the disease and rebuild civilization. He broadcasts radio signals every day, hoping to contact any other survivors who may be immune like him, but to no avail. One day, Neville discovers a group of uninfected people who have survived the virus due to a genetic immunity. They are led by a woman named Lisa, played by Rosalind Cash, who is initially wary of Neville, but begins to work with him on finding a cure for the virus.
When The Family discovers Neville's presence, they launch an all-out attack on his apartment, causing him to flee into the underground tunnels of the city. Neville discovers that the mutants are actually a result of the infection's initial mutation, and by administering a serum derived from his own blood to Lisa and her team, he manages to successfully cure them.
However, Neville is mortally wounded in the final battle against The Family. Lisa and her team take Neville back to his apartment, where he gives them his research and the cure before succumbing to his wounds. The film ends with Lisa and her team heading out into the sunlight, confident that Neville's cure will allow them and any other uninfected survivors to rebuild society.
