Julien Dandieu is a respected surgeon and family man living in Montauban during World War II. With the German army closing in, he fears for the safety of his wife and daughter and entrusts his friend Francois to escort them to a remote village where they can hide out in an old castle.
However, when Julien attempts to join them one week later, he finds the village occupied by German soldiers. With no means of escape, Julien becomes determined to retrieve his family and sets out on a dangerous mission to get back to the castle.
Along the way, Julien witnesses the horrors of war and becomes increasingly unhinged as he encounters betrayal, violence, and death. He becomes consumed with the desire to avenge his family and devise a plan to defeat the Germans.
As the war rages on and the stakes grow higher, Julien is faced with difficult moral choices and ultimately must decide how far he is willing to go to protect his loved ones and fight for what he believes is right.
