The Old Guard is a 2020 American superhero film based on the comic book of the same name written by Greg Rucka. The movie features Andy, played by Charlize Theron, as the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries, who have been protecting the world for centuries. The others in the group include Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), and Nicky (Luca Marinelli).
The team's abilities are discovered when they take on a mission to rescue kidnapped girls in South Sudan. However, unbeknownst to them, the mission is a trap by a former CIA agent, Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor), to capture and study them for profit. Copley is working for a pharmaceutical company led by a ruthless CEO, Merrick (Harry Melling), who is obsessed with replicating the team's immortality for his own gain.
Meanwhile, Nile (KiKi Layne), a US Marine in Afghanistan, is killed in action but miraculously resurrects. Andy comes to her aid and brings her to the group, revealing to Nile that she is also immortal. Nile struggles to come to terms with her new reality and how it will affect her life.
The team must fight off Copley's mercenaries and the pharmaceutical company's security forces while also grappling with the ethical implications of their immortality. Through flashbacks, the movie explores the team's past and how they have dealt with their long lives and losses.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard received positive reviews for its action sequences, performances, and themes of immortality and humanity.
