The Offence is a 1972 psychological thriller film directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Sean Connery. The film is about a police detective named Detective Sergeant Johnson who has become emotionally unstable after years of investigating violent crimes and child abuse cases.

Johnson becomes completely unhinged during an interrogation of a suspected child molester named Kenneth Baxter. Johnson takes Baxter to an abandoned building and brutally beats him, causing Baxter's death. Johnson is then investigated by his own department and must confront his inner demons, revealing his own dark past and personal issues.

Throughout the film, flashbacks reveal Johnson's troubled past, including his loveless marriage and a traumatic incident during his time in the military police where he witnessed a young girl being molested by a soldier. These experiences have weighed heavily on Johnson, leading him to become an angry and explosive person.
