The Nines is a psychological thriller written and directed by John August. The film stars Ryan Reynolds as a troubled actor named Gary, Melissa McCarthy as a television show runner named Margaret, and Hope Davis as an acclaimed videogame designer named Sarah.
The film is divided into three parts, each following one of the three main characters as they struggle with their own personal demons. In the first part, Gary is placed under house arrest after a drug-fueled incident. He is forced to stay inside his house with only his publicist and a mysterious neighbor for company. As he becomes increasingly paranoid, strange events begin to occur around him.
In the second part, Margaret is struggling to produce her television show and is under pressure from the network to make changes. She hires a new writer, who turns out to be a former lover. As she tries to juggle her career and personal life, strange events occur that make her question her sanity.
In the final part, Sarah is working on a new videogame that she believes will be her masterpiece. As she becomes obsessed with her project, strange occurrences begin to happen in her life that threaten her sanity.
Throughout the film, the lives of the three main characters become increasingly intertwined in inexplicable and unsettling ways. The Nines is a mind-bending thriller that explores the nature of reality and the human psyche.
