The Nightingale is a historical drama film directed by Jennifer Kent. The story is set in 1825 in Tasmania (then known as Van Diemen's Land), a British colony where many Irish convicts were sent to serve their sentences. The main character, Claire, is one such convict, who has been transported to Australia for theft.

Claire suffered a horrific tragedy when a British soldier, Lieutenant Hawkins, raped and killed her husband and child. After being released from prison, Hawkins travels north with a group of soldiers, and Claire sets out on a dangerous journey through the Tasmanian wilderness to seek revenge.

Claire enlists the services of an Aboriginal tracker named Billy, who is also haunted by his own traumatic past. As they journey through the harsh, unforgiving landscape, Claire and Billy form an unlikely bond and begin to understand each other's struggles.

The Nightingale explores themes of colonialism, racism, and violence, presenting a confronting, unflinching depiction of the brutal history of Australia's colonial past. The film was praised for its powerful performances, cinematography, and direction, but was also criticised for its graphic content, particularly in relation to sexual violence.
