Two teachers, Doris and Marian, travel to the remote Yorkshire moors to spend their summer vacation together. They arrive at a small village and inquire about their friend Evelyn, who disappeared a year ago while on vacation in the same area. The villagers tell them that Evelyn was last seen near a ruined mansion on the moors.
As they continue their journey, they come across the mansion and decide to explore it. During their exploration, they encounter Stephen, a former pianist who now lives in the mansion and is suffering from shell shock from the Spanish Civil War.
Due to a sudden flood caused by heavy rains, the two teachers are forced to spend the night in the mansion with Stephen. While staying overnight, Marian starts to suspect that Stephen might be responsible for Evelyn's disappearance, but also finds herself attracted to him.
The next day, Doris leaves the area but Marian stays behind to investigate Evelyn's disappearance. She begins to dig deeper into Stephen's past and discovers that he had a complicated relationship with Evelyn. Eventually, Marian uncovers the truth about Evelyn's fate and confronts Stephen.
As the truth is revealed, Marian becomes torn between her love for Stephen and her sense of justice for Evelyn. She must make a choice that will ultimately determine the course of her life.
