John Brennan is a community college professor and loving husband to Lara and father to their young son, Luke. Lara works in advertising, but their lives are turned upside down when Lara is accused of murdering her boss. Despite her pleas of innocence, she is found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
John is devastated and refuses to believe that his wife is guilty. He spends the next three years trying to find a way to get her released. He becomes obsessed with researching legal strategies and he starts to consider the possibility of breaking her out of prison.
John begins to study how to create a fake ID, buy guns on the black market and how to steal a car. He also befriends an ex-convict named Damon Pennington, who helps him with the logistics of breaking Lara out.
The plan is risky, but John is desperate and willing to do whatever it takes to free his wife. He successfully breaks her out of prison, but they soon realize that they are being hunted by the police and the media.
The couple goes on the run and has to rely on their wits and each other as they try to evade capture. They must also figure out how to clear Lara's name and prove her innocence.

Russell Crowe delivers a powerful performance as John Brennan, a man willing to risk everything for the woman he loves. Elizabeth Banks is equally compelling as Lara Brennan, a woman unjustly accused of murder. The film raises questions about the American justice system, the limits of love and the lengths people will go to for those they love.
