The movie The Next Best Thing stars Madonna as Abbie and Rupert Everett as Robert. Abbie and Robert have been best friends for years and decide to have a child together as they both long for the experience of parenthood. They decide to go the unconventional route and use artificial insemination to conceive.
After Sam is born, the three of them form an unconventional family, with Robert acting as the primary caregiver while Abbie works as a yoga instructor. Things take a turn when Abbie falls in love with a straight man named Ben, played by Benjamin Bratt, and wants to move away with him to start a new life.
