The Newton Brothers, consisting of Willis (played by Matthew McConaughey), Joe (Ethan Hawke), Jess (Skeet Ulrich), and Dock (Vincent D'Onofrio), are struggling to make ends meet as farmers in Texas during the 1920s. Willis, the eldest brother, suggests to his younger brothers that they should start robbing banks to make some quick cash.
Initially reluctant, the brothers eventually agree to Willis's plan. They begin their criminal career by robbing small banks in Texas, but as they become more successful, they start targeting bigger banks and make headlines across the country. Their heists are often daring and cleverly executed, using technology and tactics such as dynamite and fast cars to elude law enforcement.
Their biggest hit happens five years into their criminal career, when they plan and execute the largest train robbery in American history, stealing $3 million from a train carrying the Chicago Federal Reserve's money. Despite their success, the Newton brothers struggle to enjoy their winnings, as their exploits have made them notorious and they are constantly on the run from the law.
The Newton Boys is based on the true story of the Newton Gang, which operated during the early 20th century. The film received mixed reviews but was praised for its period setting, attention to detail, and strong performances by the cast.
