The New Testament

Comedy  France

"The New Testament" (Le Nouveau Testament) is a French dark comedy directed by Jaco Van Dormael. It tells the story of God (Benoît Poelvoorde), who is a cruel authoritarian figure, living in a high-rise apartment in contemporary Brussels.

In the film, Dr. Marcelin (Catherine Deneuve), a wealthy woman, dies and leaves a new version of her last will and testament behind. However, when her husband and children realize that they are not the beneficiaries, they do everything they can to prevent the will from being revealed.

Meanwhile, God's rebellious daughter, Ea (Pili Groyne), decides to hack into her father's computer and release the names of every person's death date to everybody in the world, leading to chaos and anarchy. She escapes from home with her brother, J.C. (Jésus), played by Marco Lorenzi.

As the film unfolds, the family members become increasingly paranoid, and the chaos escalates, leading to some unexpected twists and turns. In the end, the audience is left to ponder the meaning of life, death, and the human condition.

"The New Testament" is a visually stunning and humorously irreverent film that deftly blends Christian imagery with contemporary social commentary. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 and went on to receive critical acclaim and several award nominations.
