Roy Hobbs is a talented baseball player who has been away from the game for some time due to mysterious circumstances. He shows up at a tryout for the New York Knights, a struggling team, and impresses the coach with his incredible hitting abilities.
As Hobbs joins the team, he starts to make a difference as they begin to win more games. He also develops relationships with the other players on the team, including the veteran catcher, Pop Fisher, and a young pitcher named "The Whammer."
However, Hobbs also attracts the attention of an unknown woman who seems oddly interested in his success. As he continues to play well, he earns the nickname "The Natural."
Despite setbacks and challenges, including an injury and internal team conflicts, Hobbs and the Knights make it to the World Series. In the final game, Hobbs faces off against his long-time rival, "The Whammer," who has since become a coach for the opposing team.
In a dramatic, final at-bat, Hobbs hits a towering home run that breaks the stadium lights and brings the Knights to victory. He also discovers that the mysterious woman who had been following him is his childhood sweetheart, Iris, who had believed him to be dead.
The Natural is a story about redemption, second chances, and the power of natural talent and determination. It is based on the novel by Bernard Malamud.
