The college graduate, Annie Braddock (played by Scarlett Johansson), initially takes the job as a nanny for the wealthy X family to earn some money while figuring out her career path. However, she soon realizes that her duties go far beyond simply taking care of the X family's son, Grayer (played by Nicholas Art), who is a difficult child due to his parents' neglect.
Annie becomes increasingly involved in the X family's dysfunctional dynamics, witnessing the distant relationship between Mrs. X (played by Laura Linney) and Mr. X (played by Paul Giamatti), the cold and demanding behavior of Mrs. X towards her son and staff, and the constant power struggle with the X family's enigmatic and manipulative socialite friend named Mrs. X (played by Alicia Keys).
At the same time, Annie strikes up a romantic connection with a Harvard Hottie named 'Harvard Grad' (played by Chris Evans), who lives in the same building as the X family. The two share a mutual attraction, but Annie's job and increasing troubles with the X family make their relationship complicated.
As the movie progresses, Annie tries to balance her personal life with her responsibilities as a nanny, but things come to a head when Mrs. X fires her without notice. Annie is left to confront the reality of the X family's toxic environment and to decide on her next steps in life.
The Nanny Diaries is a satirical take on the Upper East Side elite and their privileged lifestyles. It highlights the power dynamics at play in families with domestic staff, as well as the challenges of making authentic connections in a superficial world.
