The Name of the Rose is a 1986 mystery drama film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Based on the novel of the same name by Umberto Eco, the movie stars Sean Connery as William of Baskerville and Christian Slater as his young apprentice, Adso of Melk.

The movie is set in 1327 in a Benedictine monastery in northern Italy, where representatives of the Papacy are meeting with those of the Holy Roman Empire to discuss church-related issues. However, as the monks gather for the meeting, a series of mysterious murders begins to occur. William, who is a highly intelligent former inquisitor, is invited to the monastery to investigate the deaths.

William begins to unravel the mystery by carefully examining the clues left behind by the killer. He is aided in his investigations by Adso, a young novice who becomes increasingly drawn to the mystery and complexity of his mentor's investigative techniques. As William delves deeper into the investigation, he discovers that the murders are connected to a forbidden manuscript that is highly prized by the abbey's inner circle.

As William and Adso get closer to the truth, they find themselves increasingly at odds with the monks who are determined to keep the manuscript secret. Their efforts to solve the murders also put them at odds with the powerful Inquisition, which is wary of anyone who seeks to uncover forbidden knowledge.

The Name of the Rose is a gripping and atmospheric mystery that explores themes of faith, power, and knowledge. The movie features an all-star cast that also includes F. Murray Abraham, Ron Perlman, and William Hickey. The film is notable for its stunning visual depictions of the monastery and its labyrinthine library, as well as for its powerful performances and gripping plot.
