The Mustang tells the story of Roman Coleman, a violent convict who is serving time in a Nevada prison. He is given the opportunity to participate in a rehabilitation program that involves training wild mustangs as part of a program designed to help both the animals and the inmates.
At first, Roman struggles to connect with the horses and his fellow inmates, but as he becomes more adept at handling the animals, he begins to confront his own violent past. Along the way, he develops a bond with a particularly stubborn horse named Marquis, whom he must earn the trust of before he can begin to train him.
As Roman struggles to tame Marquis, he also grapples with his own inner demons and learns to let go of the anger that has been driving his violent behavior. Through his relationship with the horse, Roman begins to see that there is hope for his future and that he can break the cycle of violence that has defined his life.
The Mustang is a powerful and moving film that explores themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the healing power of the human-animal connection. It features outstanding performances from Matthias Schoenaerts as Roman, Jason Mitchell as fellow inmate Henry, and Bruce Dern as the head of the rehabilitation program.
