The Mummy is a 2017 American action-adventure film directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie and Dylan Kussman. The film stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella and Russell Crowe.
The story begins in ancient Egypt, where Ahmanet (Boutella), a powerful princess of the empire, is about to be crowned queen. However, when her father has a son, Ahmanet realizes that her position and power are threatened. In a desperate attempt to gain power, she makes a pact with the god of death, Set. Ahmanet kills her family and attempts to sacrifice her lover to bring Set into human form. As punishment for her actions, she is mummified alive and buried far away from civilization.
In present day, soldier-of-fortune Nick Morton (Cruise) accidentally discovers Ahmanet's tomb while working with archaeologist Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis). Upon opening the sarcophagus, they unknowingly release Ahmanet, who begins to wreak havoc and terrorize modern-day London.
It is revealed that Morton was chosen by Ahmanet to be the vessel for Set's resurrection. The two engage in a deadly battle, with the help of Dr. Henry Jekyll (Crowe), head of Prodigium, a secret organization dedicated to battling supernatural threats.
The Mummy received mixed reviews from critics but was a box office success, grossing over $410 million worldwide. Plans for a sequel were canceled after the film's poor critical and commercial reception.
