In The Monster That Challenged the World, a series of earthquakes in California's Salton Sea creates a crack in the ocean floor, releasing a swarm of giant mollusks known as sea scorpions. These prehistoric creatures start attacking and killing people, and a team of Navy personnel, led by Commander "Twill" Twillinger, is called in to investigate the phenomenon.

As the sea scorpions continue to wreak havoc, Twill and his team work to find a way to stop them. They discover that the creatures are reproducing rapidly and have created a massive underground nest. The team comes up with a plan to flood the nest, but they must first navigate dangerous underwater caves and avoid the sea scorpions' deadly attacks.

The tension builds as Twill and his team race against time to stop the sea scorpions and save the residents of the nearby town. Along the way, they also uncover a sinister conspiracy involving the mysterious Institute of Oceanography.
