The Money Pit is a 1986 American comedy film directed by Richard Benjamin and stars Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. The film centers around a young couple, Walter and Anna, who decide to buy a beautiful mansion for a steal of a price, only to realize that the house is filled with hidden problems that could cost them a fortune to fix.
As soon as Walter and Anna move in, they discover that the house is falling apart. The plumbing is faulty, the electrical system is outdated, the fireplace is clogged, the stairs are unstable, and the roof leaks. The more they try to fix things, the worse they get. They hire contractors who turn out to be incompetent or fraudulent, and they have to keep pouring money into the house just to keep it standing.
As they struggle to keep their relationship intact amidst the chaos, they also endure a comical series of mishaps, including a bathtub falling through the floor, a runaway piano, and a collapsing staircase. Eventually, they realize that the only way to salvage their investment is to give up and sell the house to someone else.
The Money Pit was a commercial success, grossing over $50 million at the box office and receiving mixed reviews from critics. Although it was not considered a critical triumph, it has become a cult classic and is remembered as one of Hanks' earlier comedic roles before he became a major star.
