The Molly Maguires were a secret society of Irish coal miners in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in the late 19th century. They were named after a legendary Irish figure and operated under a strict code of secrecy and loyalty to their cause.
The miners were exploited and mistreated by the coal company they worked for, which maintained dangerous and unsanitary work conditions and paid abysmal wages. In response, the Molly Maguires began a campaign of sabotage and intimidation against the company, attacking mining facilities and managers, and even carrying out assassinations.
The movie follows the story of one such group of Molly Maguires, led by James McParlan, an undercover Pinkerton detective who infiltrates the group in order to gather evidence against them. McParlan starts to become conflicted as he witnesses the terrible working conditions and mistreatment of the miners, and befriends some of the Molly Maguire leaders.
As tensions between the miners and the company escalate, McParlan must decide where his allegiances lie and whether he will betray the Molly Maguires to his employers or side with the miners in their fight for justice.
The movie is a fictionalized account of real events that took place in Pennsylvania in the 1870s, and explores themes of labor rights, social justice, and the power of solidarity among workers. It features a strong cast led by Sean Connery as Jack Kehoe, one of the leaders of the Molly Maguires, and includes powerful performances by Richard Harris and Samantha Eggar.
