David Drayton (played by Thomas Jane) and his son Billy (played by Nathan Gamble) are in a grocery store with several other people, including a religious fanatic named Mrs. Carmody (played by Marcia Gay Harden), who begins to gather a following and preach that the mist is punishment from God. David and a few other survivors attempt to rescue others trapped outside the store, but are quickly attacked by grotesque creatures hiding in the mist.
As tensions rise among the survivors, Mrs. Carmody becomes more violent and her followers become more fanatical, leading to a deadly showdown between the two factions. Meanwhile, David and his group discover that the military has a plan to clear the mist, but it requires deadly sacrifices.
The ending of the movie is notoriously controversial and divisive among audiences, with David and two others making a desperate escape from the grocery store only to encounter a military convoy driving through the mist, revealing that the world has been overrun by the creatures. David then chooses to mercy kill his remaining companions before surrendering to the military and their uncertain fate.
