In the film, Rose (played by Barbra Streisand) is encouraged by her sister to place a personal ad in the newspaper. Gregory (played by Jeff Bridges) responds to the ad, and they go on a date to a museum and have a conversation about their respective desires for a relationship.
While Rose is looking for passion and romance, Gregory is seeking a platonic relationship where sex is off the table. Despite their differing expectations, they continue to spend time together and form a close bond.
