The Mighty Peking Man (also known as Goliathon, Colossus of Congo, and simply Peking Man) is a 1977 Hong Kong monster movie directed by Ho Meng-hua. It was produced by Shaw Brothers Studio and distributed by the Hong Kong-based Golden Harvest. The film stars Danny Lee as Johnny Feng, director of the expedition to capture the Mighty Peking Man, and Evelyn Kraft as Samantha, the young woman who is raised by the monster. The Mighty Peking Man himself was portrayed by an actor in a gorilla suit, with the special effects provided by the Italian special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi.
The film follows Johnny Feng and his team of adventurers as they journey through the Himalayas in search of the legendary creature known as the Mighty Peking Man. Along the way, they encounter a number of obstacles, including treacherous terrain, dangerous wild animals, and quicksand. Despite the dangers, Johnny is determined to capture the monster and bring it back to Hong Kong as a blockbuster attraction.
When Johnny and his team finally encounter the Mighty Peking Man, they discover that he has been raising Samantha since she survived a plane crash years earlier. The two quickly fall in love, but their happiness is short-lived when the unscrupulous promoter Lu Tien takes over and puts the Mighty Peking Man on display as part of a freak show exhibition.
When Lu Tien assaults Samantha, the Mighty Peking Man's protective instincts take over, and he breaks free from his chains and rampages through the streets of Hong Kong. The final scenes of the movie feature an epic battle between the Mighty Peking Man and the military, with Johnny and Samantha caught in the middle.
Despite its low budget and relatively simple special effects, The Mighty Peking Man has developed a cult following over the years and is often cited as a classic of Hong Kong cinema.
