"The Mercy" follows the true story of Donald Crowhurst (played by Colin Firth), a British businessman and amateur sailor, who enters the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, hoping to win the prize money and save his failing business. Despite lacking experience and proper equipment, Crowhurst sets off on the journey to circumnavigate the globe on his trimaran, Teignmouth Electron.
However, as the journey progresses, Crowhurst falls behind in the race and realizes he may not be able to complete the voyage. As a result, he begins to falsify his logbooks and radio reports to suggest he is making progress, when in reality, he is moving in circles in the Atlantic Ocean. His deception becomes increasingly delusional and dangerous as he runs out of supplies and becomes more isolated from the rest of the world.
Meanwhile, his wife Clare (Rachel Weisz) and their children anxiously await his return and the financial security it could bring. As Crowhurst's lies and mental state unravel, the race for survival becomes more pressing, and the world watches, captivated by his fate.
"The Mercy" is a poignant and tragic tale of one man's quest for glory and the toll it takes on his family and himself.
