The Many Saints of Newark is a prequel to the critically acclaimed HBO series The Sopranos. The film is set in the 1960s and 1970s and follows the young Anthony Soprano, played by Michael Gandolfini, who is the son of the iconic character Tony Soprano, played by his late father James Gandolfini in the series.
The movie explores the relationship between Anthony, or Tony, and his uncle Dickie Moltisanti, played by Alessandro Nivola. Dickie is a respected and charismatic member of the DiMeo crime family, and Tony looks up to him as a role model. However, Dickie's influence on Tony is both positive and negative, as he introduces him to the world of organized crime but also tries to steer him away from its violent and destructive tendencies.
As Tony navigates his way through adolescence, he also has to contend with the changing social and political climate of Newark. The civil rights movement and the Vietnam War are putting pressure on the traditional power structures, and rival gangs are starting to pose a threat to the DiMeo family's dominance. Tony's loyalty to his family will be tested, and he will have to make difficult choices that will shape his future as a mob boss.
The Many Saints of Newark also features an ensemble cast that includes Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Ray Liotta, and Corey Stoll. The film is directed by Alan Taylor, who helmed several episodes of The Sopranos, and is written by series creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner. The movie has been highly anticipated by fans of the series and is set to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1, 2021.
