The Man from Snowy River is a 1982 Australian film directed by George Miller. It is based on the poem "The Man from Snowy River" by Banjo Paterson. The film stars Tom Burlinson as Jim Craig, Sigrid Thornton as Jessica Harrison, and Kirk Douglas as twin brothers Harrison and Spur.

After his father's death, Jim Craig leaves his mountain home to work for Harrison, hoping to earn enough money to buy back his family's farm. Harrison is a wealthy rancher who owns a prized horse, an untamed colt that he wants to breed with his champion mare. Harrison's daughter Jessica takes an interest in Jim, and the two begin a romance.

However, Jim soon finds himself embroiled in a feud between Harrison and Spur, his estranged twin brother. Spur runs a rival ranch, and the two brothers have been bitter enemies for years. When the colt escapes and joins a wild herd in the mountains, Jim is sent to retrieve it and prove himself to Harrison. Along the way, he must navigate treacherous terrain, fend off a pack of wild dogs, and confront Spur, who is also searching for the colt.

The film features stunning shots of the Australian wilderness, including the rugged Snowy Mountains. It also showcases the skills of the riders who perform the horseback stunts, many of whom were locals and experienced mountain riders. The Man from Snowy River was a critical and commercial success, and is now considered a classic of Australian cinema. It spawned a sequel in 1988, The Man from Snowy River II, and a television series in 1994.
