The film follows Susanne Mallison (Claire Bloom), a British woman who visits her brother and his German wife in post-war Berlin. Susanne becomes enamored with her sister-in-law's former lover, Ivo Kern (James Mason), a mysterious man who seems to have ties to the Communist bloc.

Susanne unwittingly becomes involved in a smuggling operation, where she delivers a package for Ivo, only to realize later that it contained classified documents. Susanne begins to fear for her own safety and turns to her brother for help. Her brother enlists the help of a British intelligence officer, Colonel Brodie (Geoffrey Toone), to uncover the truth behind the smuggling ring and protect Susanne.

As Susanne becomes more deeply embroiled in the espionage plot, she learns more about Ivo's past and his connection to the Communist regime. She must decide whether to trust him or turn him over to the authorities.

James Mason gives a standout performance as Ivo Kern, a charismatic and complex character who is torn between his loyalties to the Communist party and his love for Susanne. Claire Bloom also shines as Susanne, a naive young woman who becomes caught up in a dangerous game of espionage.

The Man Between is a tense and atmospheric thriller that explores the aftermath of World War II and the political tensions between the Western Allies and the Soviet bloc.
