The Maltese Falcon is a film noir based on the detective novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett. The film was directed by John Huston and was released in 1941. It stars Humphrey Bogart as private detective Sam Spade, Mary Astor as femme fatale Brigid O'Shaughnessy, and Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet as the eccentric criminals Joel Cairo and Kasper Gutman, respectively.
The plot revolves around the search for a priceless statuette of a falcon that has been stolen and is believed to be in San Francisco. Sam Spade is hired by Brigid O'Shaughnessy to find the falcon, but soon discovers that she is not who she seems and is involved in a web of lies and deceit. Spade also becomes wrapped up in the schemes of Joel Cairo and Kasper Gutman, who are also searching for the falcon.
