After Private gets stuffed into a stocking, he is accidentally taken back to a small apartment in the city instead of being returned to the Central Park Zoo. There, he meets a little girl named Jojo who is disappointed with her present from Santa Claus. Private empathizes with her and decides to help her have a better Christmas by finding her the toy she really wants - a battery-operated car.
As Private embarks on his mission, the other penguins and animals at the zoo realize that he is missing and set out to find him. Meanwhile, Private encounters numerous obstacles in his quest, including a stray cat and an alarm system in a toy store.
In the end, Private manages to retrieve the car and returns to Jojo's apartment just as she is about to give up hope. Jojo is thrilled with her new toy and Private is reunited with his penguin friends, just in time to celebrate Christmas together.
