The Resurgence: Rise of the Golden Pimp

Drama  United States of America

The Mack is a Blaxploitation film from 1973, directed by Michael Campus and starring Max Julien as Goldie, a newly-released convict who finds himself drawn back into the world of pimping. Goldie's brother Olinga (played by Roger E. Mosley) tries to convince him to go straight, but Goldie is determined to make it big in the underground world of prostitution.

With the help of his friend and fellow pimp Slim (Richard Pryor), Goldie rises to the top of the game, becoming the most successful pimp in Oakland. But his success attracts unwanted attention from corrupt police officers Keneally (William Watson) and Hughes (Don Gordon), who demand a cut of his profits in exchange for protection.

Things come to a head when Goldie refuses to pay the cops, and they frame him for murder. Goldie is forced to go on the run, but he is eventually caught and sent back to prison. However, he manages to escape and seeks revenge on the corrupt cops who betrayed him.

Meanwhile, a powerful crime lord named Pretty Tony (played by Julius Harris) wants Goldie to work for him. Goldie initially refuses, but when he discovers that his former girlfriend is being held captive by Pretty Tony, he agrees to work for him in exchange for her freedom.

The Mack is a gritty, violent movie that portrays the seedy underbelly of the pimping world in the 1970s. It features a standout performance from Max Julien as Goldie, as well as a memorable supporting turn from comedian Richard Pryor.
