Dennis Barlow, a British poet, arrives in Los Angeles to live with his uncle, Sir Francis Hinsley, a respected writer. However, upon arriving, Dennis learns that his uncle has committed suicide. He reluctantly turns to Whispering Glades, a top-of-the-line funeral home, to arrange for his uncle's burial.
At Whispering Glades, Dennis meets several peculiar characters; the Reverend Glenworthy, the founder of the funeral home who imposes strict rules on the staff; Mr Joyboy, the mortician with a disturbing fascination with his work; and Aimee Thanatogenos, a beautiful cosmetician who catches Dennis's eye.
As Dennis struggles to come to terms with his uncle's death and his own precarious situation, he finds himself increasingly drawn to Aimee's eccentricities. However, the Reverend Glenworthy sees their flirtation as a violation of the funeral home's strict code of conduct.
Meanwhile, Mr Joyboy grows increasingly jealous of Dennis's attention towards Aimee and sets out to sabotage their relationship. As tensions mount and secrets are uncovered, Dennis must navigate the treacherous world of the funeral industry if he hopes to find love and live a fulfilling life in Hollywood.
