The Long Ships is a 1964 adventure film directed by Jack Cardiff and starring Richard Widmark, Sidney Poitier, and Russ Tamblyn. The film is based on the 1951 novel of the same name by Frans G. Bengtsson.

The story is set in the 10th century and revolves around Viking leader Rolfe (Widmark), who is known for his cunning and devious mind. Rolfe tells other sailors of a giant bell made of gold, known as "The Mother of Voices," that is said to have magical powers. However, he adds incorrect details to his story to mislead others and keep the bell for himself.

Aly Mansuh (Poitier), the leader of a group of ambitious Moors, sees through Rolfe's story and realizes that the bell is real. He decides to join forces with Rolfe to capture the bell and share the wealth. The two form an uneasy alliance and set sail on a dangerous quest to find the bell.

Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including treacherous weather, fierce battles, and unexpected allies. They also encounter a beautiful Saracen princess named Aminah (Beba Loncar), who becomes a pawn in the race to capture the bell.

As they approach their destination, the two groups face off in a final showdown to determine who will claim the Mother of Voices. The film features spectacular sea battles, impressive sets and costumes, and an epic score by composer Dušan Radić.

Despite mixed reviews upon its release, The Long Ships has become a cult classic and is remembered for its swashbuckling adventure and colorful cast of characters.
