Murder Mystery: A Friend's Dilemma

Thriller,Crime,Drama,Mystery  United States of America

The Long Goodbye is a 1973 film directed by Robert Altman and starring Elliot Gould as detective Philip Marlowe. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Raymond Chandler.

In the movie, Marlowe's friend Terry Lennox (Jim Bouton) asks him for a ride to Tijuana, but when he returns home, he finds his wife Sylvia (Sylvia Miles) dead and he disappears. The police accuse Lennox of murder and Marlowe is determined to clear his friend's name.

Marlowe investigates the case, questioning Sylvia's jaded friends and her alcoholic ex-husband Roger (Mark Rydell). As he delves deeper, he uncovers a web of secrets and deceit that suggests Sylvia's death may not be as straightforward as it seems. He also encounters some dangerous and unpredictable characters along the way, including a sleazy writer (Sterling Hayden) and a ruthless gangster (Henry Gibson).

Throughout the investigation, Marlowe remains stoic and witty, never losing his cool despite the twists and turns of the case. He eventually unravels the mystery and confronts the killer, but not before putting his own life on the line.

The Long Goodbye is often regarded as one of the best adaptations of a Raymond Chandler novel, thanks in part to Altman's unconventional approach to the material. Gould's portrayal of Marlowe as a laid-back and somewhat eccentric character was a departure from the traditional hard-boiled detective, but it proved to be a hit with audiences and critics alike. The film's stylish direction, sharp dialogue, and memorable performances make it a must-see for fans of film noir.
