Leigh, the former valedictorian played by Kristen Bell, is struggling with feeling lost and stuck in her life. She decides to quit her job as a reporter in New York and return to her childhood home in Connecticut. Despite having a successful career, Leigh feels unfulfilled and unhappy.
To escape the monotony of her life, Leigh takes up a job as a lifeguard at a local pool. It is here that she meets Jason, a troubled teenager played by David Lambert, who is struggling with his own personal demons. Despite their age difference and obvious issues, Leigh and Jason form a deep, complicated relationship that becomes increasingly dangerous.
As Leigh becomes more entangled in Jason's life, she starts to neglect her own responsibilities and relationships. She struggles to balance her job as a lifeguard, her relationship with her best friend Mel, played by Mamie Gummer, and the dangerous attraction she feels towards Jason.
The Lifeguard explores themes of self-discovery, growing up, and the dangers of longing for the past. Leigh's journey is fraught with uncomfortable and dangerous situations, and it is ultimately up to her to decide whether to stay in Connecticut or go back to her old life in New York.
