The Lie is a 2018 psychological thriller film directed and written by Veena Sud. The story revolves around a father, Jay, and his daughter, Kayla, who are on their way to a dance camp. On their way, they spot Kayla's best friend, Brittany, walking on the side of the road in the rain. Feeling guilty for not inviting her to the dance camp, they offer her a ride, but the situation quickly turns sinister.
While in the car, Brittany confesses to Jay that she was assaulted by her boyfriend, Sam, and that she broke up with him. Shocked and angry, Jay demands to see Sam and pay him a visit. When they reach Sam's house, Jay confronts Sam and ends up killing him in a moment of rage.
Jay and Kayla then devise a plan to cover up the murder, asking Brittany to go along with their lie that Sam ran away. As the days pass, the three become more and more consumed by guilt and paranoia, leading to a series of disturbing events that unravel their lives and relationships.
The film stars Mireille Enos as Jay, Peter Sarsgaard as Sam, and Joey King as Kayla. The Lie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018 and was later released on Amazon Prime Video in 2020. It received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the performances and direction while others criticized the plot as convoluted and implausible.
