The Last Word is a heartwarming dramedy film that tells the story of Harriett Lauler (played by Shirley MacLaine), a retired businesswoman who has always been in control of everything in her life. She is a perfectionist who has never let anyone get close to her and has always been critical of everyone around her, including her estranged daughter Anne (played by Anne Heche).
Feeling isolated and unfulfilled, Harriett decides to write her own obituary to make sure that it reflects her life and accomplishments accurately. Harriett introduces Anne to the joys of life, including gardening, cooking, and listening to music, and Anne helps Harriett reconnect with her past and confront the mistakes she has made.
As their bond grows stronger, Anne learns that Harriett has a tragic secret that has haunted her for years, and she realizes that writing Harriett's obituary is not just a job but a way to honor her legacy and make a difference in her final days.
